Garlic extract: the kitchen herb research backs for men’s blood vessels
· 8 分で読めます · Nicky Pimpz
Garlic is in every Thai kitchen, but did you know garlic is one of the most studied herbs in the world, especially for the heart and blood vessels?
For men, healthy blood vessels are the foundation of everything: energy, fitness and circulation throughout the body. Here is a summary in plain language.
The 30-second summary
- Garlic’s key compounds are allicin and several other sulphur compounds
- A meta-analysis of 12 trials found it lowered systolic blood pressure by 8.3 mmHg on average in people with high blood pressure
- A meta-analysis of 39 trials found it lowered total cholesterol by 17 mg/dL in people with high cholesterol
- People on blood thinners should check with a doctor first
What are garlic and garlic extract?
Garlic (Allium sativum) has been used as food and medicine for more than 5,000 years, from ancient Egypt to traditional Thai medicine.
When garlic is crushed, chopped or smashed, an enzyme turns its precursor into allicin, the source of its pungent smell and many of its benefits. Garlic also contains other sulphur compounds, such as S-allyl cysteine, found in garlic extracts.
Garlic extract concentrates these compounds in a controlled amount, and most human studies used garlic in supplement form.
How does garlic work?
Put simply, there are three main effects:
- Relaxing blood vessels. Garlic compounds boost the production of nitric oxide and hydrogen sulphide, signalling molecules that tell blood vessels to relax.
- Supporting blood pressure. As vessels become more flexible, blood pressure falls.
- Supporting cholesterol. It helps lower total and LDL ("bad") cholesterol.
If blood vessels are "pipes", garlic helps keep them flexible and free-flowing.
What do human studies say?
Garlic stands out for its meta-analyses, a high level of evidence that pools many studies together.
Blood pressure
Ried’s 2020 analysis pooled 12 trials with 553 people with high blood pressure and found garlic lowered systolic pressure by 8.3 mmHg and diastolic by 5.5 mmHg on average.
Cholesterol
Ried and colleagues’ 2013 analysis pooled 39 trials and found that in people with cholesterol above 200 mg/dL, taking garlic for more than 2 months lowered total cholesterol by 17 mg/dL and LDL by 9 mg/dL.
To be straight with you: the effects are clearest in people who already have high blood pressure or cholesterol, and studies used hundreds of milligrams to grams of garlic a day. Garlic is a "supporting helper" and cannot replace medicine prescribed by your doctor.
Why do blood vessels matter for men?
Every organ needs blood, and good circulation depends on flexible blood vessels. As men get older or develop high blood pressure or cholesterol, many start to feel less energetic than they used to. Looking after your blood vessels is the foundation of men’s health.
That is why men’s formulas often pair garlic with L-arginine: both are linked to nitric oxide, the molecule that helps blood vessels relax (read more: L-Arginine explained).

Garlic FAQ
Does raw garlic work like the extract?
Raw garlic is beneficial, but its active content varies and you need to eat a lot consistently, which many people can’t stand because of the smell. That is why most human studies used garlic supplements.
Why should garlic be crushed first?
Allicin forms when garlic cells break open and the enzyme reacts with its precursor. Swallowing whole cloves without crushing or chewing yields less allicin.
How long before I see results?
Cholesterol studies found clear effects after more than 2 months of continued use. For a finished product, follow the label.
Can I take garlic with L-arginine?
Yes, and it is a popular pairing in men’s formulas because both are linked to nitric oxide, as in Nicky9 Men.
The bottom line
Garlic is a kitchen herb backed by meta-analyses for blood pressure and cholesterol, and healthy blood vessels are the foundation of men’s health. For garlic, L-arginine, zinc and men’s herbs in one capsule, without the smell, take a look at Nicky9 Men.
