Black pepper extract (piperine): the absorption helper good formulas rely on
· 阅读约 9 分钟 · Nicky Pimpz
Ever wondered why so many quality supplements, from turmeric to men’s formulas, list "black pepper extract" on the label?
The answer: black pepper isn’t there for flavour. It works as an "absorption helper". Here it is, explained in 5 minutes.
The 30-second summary
- The key compound in black pepper is piperine, which gives pepper its heat
- Piperine slows the "checkpoints" in the gut and liver that normally break down some compounds before they reach the blood
- Human studies found it helps the body take in more coenzyme Q10, beta-carotene and curcumin
- People on regular medication should check with a doctor, as piperine may affect levels of some drugs
What are black pepper and piperine?
Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is known as "the king of spices". It has been traded since ancient times and was once worth its weight in gold. Thailand grows excellent pepper too, especially in Chanthaburi.
Pepper’s heat comes from piperine, the same compound extracted for supplements. In India’s Ayurvedic tradition, black pepper is one of the "trikatu" spices, added to herbal formulas for thousands of years to help them work better.
How does piperine help absorption?
Imagine your body as an "airport". The nutrients you swallow are passengers, and before they reach the city (your bloodstream) they must pass checkpoints in the gut and liver. These checkpoints break down or send back certain compounds, so many passengers are turned away.
The main checkpoints are:
- The CYP3A4 enzyme in the gut and liver, which breaks down many compounds
- P-glycoprotein (P-gp), a pump that pushes some compounds back out of the gut
- Glucuronidation, which tags compounds for faster removal from the body
A 2002 study found piperine inhibits both human CYP3A4 and P-gp. Put simply, piperine is like an officer who opens a fast-track lane so more passengers get through.
What do human studies say?
Coenzyme Q10
A 2000 study gave volunteers 120 mg of CoQ10 a day with piperine for 21 days and found blood CoQ10 levels about 30% higher than placebo.
Beta-carotene
A 1999 study found that taking beta-carotene with piperine for 14 days raised blood beta-carotene 60% more than placebo.
Curcumin (from turmeric)
The most famous study, by Shoba and colleagues (1998), gave volunteers 2 g of curcumin with 20 mg of piperine and found blood curcumin levels several times higher than curcumin alone, which was barely detectable.
To be straight with you: these studies are small, some were run by researchers linked to the extract’s maker, and the often-quoted "2,000%" curcumin figure comes from comparing against an almost undetectable baseline. Newer studies suggest the real effect may be smaller. Still, the overall picture points the same way: piperine helps the body take in more of certain compounds.
Why do men’s formulas include black pepper?
A multi-ingredient formula gives the best value when the body takes in its ingredients well. That is why modern men’s formulas often add black pepper extract as a "helper" alongside ingredients such as:
- Black ginger, the "Thai ginseng" (read more: Thai black ginger)
- Korean ginseng and cordyceps, Asian herbs for vitality (read more: Korean ginseng + cordyceps)
- L-Arginine, the nitric oxide building block (read more: L-Arginine explained)
Note that most absorption studies looked at CoQ10, beta-carotene and curcumin, not every ingredient directly.

Cautions
- If you take regular medication, check with a doctor or pharmacist first: piperine slows enzymes that break down many drugs, so it may raise drug levels in the blood
- People with acid reflux or gastritis may feel some stomach burning
- Pregnant, breastfeeding, or a child: don’t take concentrated extracts without medical advice
Black pepper FAQ
Does pepper in food work like the extract?
Food pepper contains some piperine, but the amount varies. Extracts contain a controlled amount, which is why supplements use them.
Is piperine spicy?
Not in capsule form, because you swallow it directly.
Why add black pepper to a supplement?
Because piperine slows the gut and liver "checkpoints", helping the body take in more of certain compounds. A formula with black pepper is a sign it was carefully designed.
Can I take piperine every day?
Supplements and most studies use a few tens of milligrams a day. Follow the label, and check with a doctor if you take regular medication.
The bottom line
Black pepper extract may not be the "hero" of a formula, but it is an important helper that lets the body take in more of certain compounds. Seeing it on a label is a sign of a carefully designed formula. If you’re looking for a well-thought-out men’s formula, take a look at Nicky9 Men, with 10 ingredients in one capsule.
