When she’s not in the mood: two pillows and a recharging heart

Every time you ask, the same answer: "I’m tired", "headache", "maybe later", until you stop asking, and start wondering. Doesn’t she love me anymore? Am I not attractive anymore?

Slow down. In most cases it isn’t that she has fallen out of love; something is taking her energy and headspace. The good news: you can help more than you think, and what works best doesn’t start in bed.

The 30-second version

  • Many women don’t feel desire first; it arrives when they feel close, safe and touched the right way
  • Stress, lack of sleep, hormones and the months after childbirth are common causes
  • Research found one extra hour of sleep raised the odds of sexual activity the next day
  • Pushing and pressure kill desire fastest. Start outside the bedroom instead

Understand first: her desire works differently

Professor Rosemary Basson, a sexual medicine physician, explained back in 2000 that many women, especially in long relationships, don’t feel spontaneous desire the way many men do. Desire follows feeling close and being touched in a way that arouses the body.

So if she never initiates, it doesn’t mean she never wants to. She may need a different path than you do (read the foreplay guide).

Why isn’t she in the mood?

Why women lose interest: stress, sleep, hormones, after childbirth, the relationship, health and medication

1. Stress and exhaustion

Bodenmann and colleagues (2010) followed 103 women who kept diaries over 3 months and found that when stress was higher, sexual activity, sexual satisfaction and relationship satisfaction all dropped. Many Thai women work full-time, sit in traffic on the way home, then look after the house, the children and sometimes parents too. By bedtime, what she wants most is sleep.

2. Not enough sleep

Kalmbach and colleagues (2015) followed more than 170 women and found that longer sleep was followed by more desire the next day, and each extra hour of sleep raised the odds of partnered sexual activity by about 14%.

3. Hormones

Desire naturally rises and falls with the menstrual cycle. Some contraceptive pills, breastfeeding and perimenopause can also lower desire or cause dryness.

4. After childbirth

Leeman and Rogers’ 2012 review found many women experience lower desire and pain during sex for months after giving birth, especially while breastfeeding when oestrogen is low, on top of the sleep deprivation of caring for a baby.

In Asian households there is also co-sleeping with the baby and living with grandparents, leaving almost no privacy. Her body and mind stay in "mum mode" 24 hours a day.

5. The relationship

Mark and Lasslo’s 2018 systematic review of desire in long-term relationships found that communication, emotional closeness and how partners feel about each other matter a lot. If there are unresolved arguments, you don’t really talk, or she feels more like a "housekeeper" than a lover, desire struggles to show up.

6. Health and medication

Depression, thyroid problems, chronic illness, some antidepressants and pain during sex are medical reasons worth having a doctor look at.

7 ways to help the spark come back

7 ways to help: talk without blame, share housework, let her sleep, hug without expectation, date like lovers, slow foreplay, look after health together

1. Talk without blame

Instead of "why do you never want to?", try "you’ve seemed so tired lately — what can I take off your plate?" Choose a relaxed moment, not right after being turned down. Many Thai women won’t raise this first; gently opening the door makes her feel safe.

2. Share the housework and childcare

It sounds unrelated, but it matters. Carlson and colleagues (2016) found that among today’s couples, those who share housework equally don’t have less sex than others, and feeling the split is fair matters more and more for sexual satisfaction. Wash up, bathe the kids, put them to bed, and let her rest.

3. Let her sleep

Take some night shifts with the baby, or let her sleep in on weekends. As the research above shows, better sleep feeds directly into desire.

4. Hug and kiss without it leading anywhere

Many women start avoiding hugs because every hug seems to turn into an invitation. Hug, kiss and hold hands without expecting it to end in bed. When she feels safe, closeness comes back by itself.

5. Date like lovers, not parents

Leave the kids with the grandparents for a night, take her to her favourite restaurant or a hotel nearby. Let her be a woman again, not "mum" or "wife" looking after everyone (overnight trip ideas).

6. Slow down the foreplay

When she is ready for closeness, don’t rush. Remember her desire may arrive along the way. Give time to kissing, massage and the touch she enjoys (read the foreplay guide).

Muise and colleagues (2013) also found that people motivated to meet their partner’s sexual needs kept their own desire higher over time. Care helps both of you.

7. Look after your health together, and see a doctor when needed

Exercise together, eat well, cut back on alcohol (exercise for a better sex life). If any of the signs below apply, offer to go to the doctor with her.

Absolutely don’t

  • ❌ Push, force or guilt-trip. "If you won’t, I’ll go elsewhere" destroys relationships. Sex must always be willing, even between husband and wife
  • ❌ Compare her to other women or to how she used to be
  • ❌ Sulk every time she says no. The more you sulk, the guiltier she feels and the further she pulls away
  • ❌ Secretly put anything in her food or drink, supplement or otherwise

When should she see a doctor?

  • Pain during sex, or significant dryness
  • A sudden drop in desire with no clear reason
  • Signs of depression: sad most days, losing interest in everything, sleeping too little or too much
  • Starting a new medicine or new contraceptive
  • Menopause symptoms such as hot flushes or irregular periods
  • Months after childbirth and still in pain or feeling very low

A gynaecologist can help in many ways, from adjusting medication to treating dryness or pain and managing hormones. There is nothing to be embarrassed about.

FAQ

She never initiates. Does that mean she doesn’t want to?

Not necessarily. Many women have "responsive" desire: it doesn’t appear out of nowhere, but when the mood and touch are right, they can fully enjoy it.

How long after childbirth does desire come back?

It varies hugely. For some it’s a few months, for others more than a year, especially while breastfeeding. Don’t rush her, and if she’s in pain or very low, see a doctor.

What if we simply want different amounts?

It’s one of the most common things couples face. Talk to find a middle ground and build closeness in other ways too. If you can’t work it out alone, a couples therapist can help a lot (lasting love in midlife).

Will Nicky9 Lady put her in the mood?

Nicky9 Lady is a dietary supplement, not a medicine, and it doesn’t fix causes like stress, sleep or relationship problems. Think of it as a self-care helper for her, alongside the 7 steps in this article.

Summary

When your partner isn’t in the mood, it is usually not because she has stopped loving you, but because of stress, exhaustion, poor sleep, hormones or emotional distance. What works starts outside the bedroom: share the load, let her rest, hug without expectation, then slowly rebuild the spark. If there are health warning signs, go to the doctor with her. And a small gift like Nicky9 Lady is another way of saying you want her to look after herself too.
